The BBC is reporting an interesting initiative on power saving tactics:
Bangladesh Suit Ban to Save Power
"The prime minister of Bangladesh has ordered male government employees to stop wearing suits, jackets and ties to save electricity. Sheikh Hasina told officials that doing so would minimise their use of air-conditioners...Bangladesh's official dress code has been rewritten - after Sheikh Hasina ordered government employees to do more to ease the country's energy shortage. Even ministers now will no longer be expected to wear suits and ties..."
I remember seeing male colleagues start coming to work wearing ties and jackets, not for the sake of appearance, but because it was the beginning of "winter" (I don't think weather in which I was still wearing thin, cotton, sleeveless kameezes counts as winter - even if I did have to throw on a shawl a couple of times) and they thought their necks would be much warmer if they wore a tie!
