The joys of air travel

I boarded my flight to Hong Kong yesterday afternoon, and spent the trip helping the old Chinese lady beside me figure out the in flight entertainment system. What's up with most airlines not having movies on demand??

I got into Honkers at about 8pm local time, thinking my connecting flight would be leaving at midnight. Since I'm a gold frequent flyer (thanks to a previous job that involved a lot of travel) I headed for the business lounge, where I was informed that my flight had been delayed until 6:25am, and that that particular lounge was only open until 11:30pm. "There's another lounge," the man said, "open 24 hours, opposite gate 2." I was at gate 80....it was a long hike, but I spent the night curled up in an armchair with my ear plugs in and my eye mask on, struggling to sleep through the pain of my sore throat every time I swallowed. But c'est la vie. Ooh la la, French...could that be where I'm heading??

I made it to my boarding gate to discover that the flight had been delayed another hour and 40 minutes. The complaints people were making at the service desk were too funny - one guy said that this meant the Vatican would be closed, and what could they do about that? Yes, the Cathay Pacific customer service representative has the power to change the opening hours of the Vatican...

Whoops, looks like I just gave away where I'm going...

3....2....1...0.5...

It's now 24 hours until I board my flight, and I've come down with some sort of lurgy: sharp stabbing pain whenever I swallow, a slight fever, and a severe case of i-can't-be-bothered-packing.

Of course, I will get around to packing my very small carry on bag (3 months, one carry on bag...awesome!) to make sure I've got all the right bits and pieces. Some of you may remember my super effective last minute time management system, I think today is a perfect time to implement it again.

See you on the flip side, catch me if you can!

Strap yourselves in for the ride

I thought I should give some explanation of the travels I'm about to embark on, to really get you excited about reading this blog. Because, these travels are going to be amazing. I don't want to give too much away, in case a particular someone discovers this (a very slim chance, but I don't want to be the one to ruin two years of planning) and finds things out before she should. Intrigued?

My friend Vardy has, as I type, begun the adventure of a lifetime. It is such a spectacular adventure, because she doesn't know anything about it. Her boyfriend, (who for the purposes of this blog will be referred to under a pseudonym, Sneaky Little Bastard [SLB]), who you will come to learn is pretty terrific, has arranged a very special trip around the world for Vards, with different people surprising her in different places. SLB has been a very busy boy.

I fly out of Brisbane on Sunday to the third destination (after Sydney and Hong Kong) in which she will be surprised. You'll find out more after I get there...but let me tease you with the fact that I'll be visiting 3 continents over the next 3 months...

Catch me if you can!
